How to Prepare for Your Permanent Makeup Appointment: A Complete Guide

Congratulations on booking your permanent makeup appointment! Whether you're getting lip blush, powder brows, or permanent eyeliner, proper preparation is essential for achieving beautiful, long-lasting results.

As a PMU artist in San Jose, I've seen firsthand how clients who follow pre-care instructions consistently achieve better pigment retention and smoother healing. This guide will walk you through everything you need to do before your appointment.

Why Pre-Care Matters for PMU Results

You might be wondering: does it really make a difference if I skip my morning coffee or keep using my retinol serum?

The short answer is yes, absolutely.

Here's why pre-care matters for your permanent makeup results:

Blood thinners (including caffeine and alcohol) increase bleeding during the procedure. When you bleed more, pigment gets pushed out of the skin instead of staying where we place it. The result? Faded, patchy results that don't last.

Skincare actives like retinol and glycolic acid thin your skin over time. Thinned skin doesn't hold pigment the same way, and you're more likely to experience sensitivity or uneven healing.

Recent facial treatments can leave your skin sensitized and unpredictable. Chemical peels, microdermabrasion, and even aggressive facials can affect how your skin responds to the PMU procedure.

Tanned skin changes how pigment appears and can make color matching much more difficult. What looks perfect on tan skin may look completely different once your tan fades.

Following these guidelines isn't about arbitrary rules — it's about protecting your investment and getting results you'll love.

The Complete PMU Pre-Care Timeline

2 Months Before: Plan Around Injectable Treatments

If you get Botox or fillers, timing is important — especially for brow procedures.

For powder brows and eyebrow procedures:

  • No Botox in the forehead or brow area for at least 2 months before your appointment
  • No fillers near the brow area for 2 months

Why does this matter? Botox affects how your facial muscles move and where your brows naturally sit. When I'm designing your brows, I need to see your natural expressions — how you look when you're relaxed, surprised, or smiling. If Botox is affecting your brow position, I can't create the most flattering shape for your natural face.

For lip blush: Botox in the forehead doesn't affect lip procedures, but if you've had lip filler, let me know during your consultation so I can account for it.

4 Weeks Before: Adjust Your Skincare Routine

This is where you'll make the biggest changes to your daily routine. Four weeks gives your skin time to normalize before your procedure.

Stop using these skincare products:

  • Retinol and retinoids — This includes Retin-A, tretinoin, adapalene (Differin), retinaldehyde, and any "retinol serum" in your routine
  • Alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) — Glycolic acid, lactic acid, mandelic acid
  • Beta hydroxy acids (BHAs) — Salicylic acid (common in acne products)
  • Strong vitamin C serums — Especially L-ascorbic acid in concentrations above 10%
  • Exfoliating products — Both physical scrubs and chemical exfoliants

Important: These products need to stay out of your routine until you're fully healed after your PMU procedure — typically 4-6 weeks. Plan accordingly!

Avoid these professional treatments:

  • Chemical peels (any strength, even "light" peels)
  • Microdermabrasion or dermaplaning
  • Laser treatments on or near the treatment area
  • Microneedling
  • Intense facials with extractions or active ingredients

For brow clients specifically:

  • Stop tweezing, threading, and waxing — I need to see your natural hair growth pattern to design the most flattering brow shape. Let those hairs grow!
  • No brow tinting, dye, or lamination — Any previous color should be completely faded before your appointment

Stay out of the sun:

Avoid tanning — both natural sun exposure and tanning beds — for at least 4 weeks before your appointment.

Tanned skin is more difficult to work with for several reasons: the pigment can heal differently, color matching becomes challenging, and tanned skin is often more sensitive. Plus, if you have a tan when I color-match your pigment, the result may look off once your tan fades.

If you're naturally dark-skinned, this isn't a concern — I'm specifically talking about temporary tans from sun exposure.

48-72 Hours Before: Eliminate Blood Thinners

This is the home stretch! For the best possible results, you need to avoid anything that thins your blood or increases bleeding.

Avoid these for 48-72 hours before your appointment:

  • Caffeine — Coffee, espresso, tea, energy drinks, soda, even chocolate
  • Alcohol — Wine, beer, cocktails, everything
  • Pain medications — Aspirin, ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), naproxen (Aleve)
  • Supplements — Fish oil, vitamin E, omega-3 fatty acids, ginkgo biloba

Note: Tylenol (acetaminophen) is safe to take if you need pain relief. It doesn't thin your blood.

Why this matters so much: When you bleed during a PMU procedure, that blood pushes the pigment out of your skin. More bleeding = less pigment retention = faded results that need more touch-ups. Caffeine, alcohol, and the medications listed above all thin your blood and increase bleeding.

I know giving up coffee for three days sounds rough. But trust me — it's worth it for results that last.

24 Hours Before: Rest and Prepare

You're almost there! The day before your appointment:

  • No exercise — Elevated heart rate increases blood flow to your skin. Skip the gym, the run, the hot yoga class.
  • Get good sleep — Being well-rested helps you relax during the procedure and supports better healing
  • Stay hydrated — Drink plenty of water, but don't overdo it right before your appointment (bathroom breaks during the procedure aren't ideal!)

Day of Your Appointment: Final Checklist

Do these things:

  • ✓ Eat a light meal 1-2 hours before (low blood sugar increases sensitivity and discomfort)
  • ✓ Arrive with a clean face — no makeup on the treatment area
  • ✓ Wear comfortable clothing you can relax in
  • ✓ Bring any medical clearance documentation if we discussed it
  • ✓ Arrive at your exact appointment time (not early, not late)

Avoid these things:

  • ✗ Don't apply any makeup to the treatment area
  • ✗ Don't wear false lashes if you're getting eyeliner
  • ✗ Don't bring guests (unless you need a translator)

What If You Forgot Something?

Life happens. You're getting ready for your appointment and realize you had coffee this morning, or you used your retinol two weeks ago instead of stopping four weeks out.

Here's what to do:

Had caffeine today? Let me know when you arrive. One cup of coffee probably won't ruin everything, but I need to know so I can account for it. If you had multiple cups or an energy drink, we might need to discuss whether to proceed.

Used retinol or acids recently? If it's been less than 2 weeks, please call me before your appointment. Depending on the product strength and how recently you used it, we may need to reschedule. It's frustrating, but better than compromised results.

Got a sunburn or fresh tan? Depending on severity, we may need to wait for your skin to return to normal. A light tan might be workable; a sunburn definitely isn't.

The bottom line: Honesty is always the best policy. I'd rather reschedule your appointment than give you results that don't last or don't look their best. We're a team, and I'm on your side.

What to Expect at Your Appointment

If you've followed this guide, you're completely prepared. Here's a quick preview of what happens when you arrive:

  1. Consultation — I'll discuss your goals, choose your colors, and answer any questions
  2. Design — I'll map out the shape and show you before we start
  3. Numbing — I apply topical numbing cream (you'll feel minimal discomfort)
  4. Procedure — The actual PMU application, which takes 1-3 hours depending on the service
  5. Aftercare review — I'll give you detailed instructions for healing
